1.2: UNDERSTANDING AND APPLING THE SIPDE PROCESS
What is SIPDE?
SEARCH the road and off the road about 20 to 30 seconds ahead for any sign of information about your plan of travel. Check all of your mirrors.
IDENTIFY any conditions within 12 to 15 seconds that could interfere with your path of travel.
PREDICT what changes in conditions are near the roadway and prepare for it.
DECIDE what action to take about 4 to 5 seconds ahead to reduce risk of a collision.
EXECUTE your decision by making a routine maneuver or some kind of emergency action.
Applying the SIPDE process fosters safe driving by enabling you to manage visibility, time, and space which is far more important to practice applying it. Make this an automatic part of your own driving.
