Fatigue, unfamiliarity with the area, and uncertain weather conditions are some factors that can increase driving risk on a long trip.
What Should You Do to Prepare for a Long Trip?
- Prepare Yourself
When traveling long distance here are some questions that you should ask yourself:
- How will I get where I want to go?
Whatever way you choose to go, plan your route carefully before you start your trip, keeping in mind all of the risks that could happen along the way.
- Where will I spend the night while I am on the road?
Plan where you will spend each night, and make your reservations in advance.
- Have I had enough sleep the night before?
Get enough rest before you get behind the wheel of a car and pull over to rest should you get tired while you’re driving. Every two hours of driving take a 15 minute break or switch drivers with someone else, drive no more than 10 hours in a day.
- Budgeting Money and Planning Your Time
Make a budget as a long trip can be expensive, budgeting by the day or by the week. In addition, by planning your schedule it will help your travel time and expense budget.
Prepare Your Car
Your car should be in great condition. Especially before a long trip you should have your mechanic do a complete tune up on your car.
Pack your car wisely as overloading can cause you to have steering problems, acceleration and braking problems. Always be sure that your tires are properly inflated to the correct tire pressure keeping in mind any extra weight you may be carrying.
When you pack your car follow these simple guideline:
- The heaviest objects should be packed at the bottom of the trunk.
- If you use a car top carrier place only the lightest objects in it, otherwise, your center of gravity will change.
- Don’t pack your car so high in the back that it obstructs your vision of the roadway behind you or that can be thrown forward in a sudden stop.
