4.2: GUIDE AND INTERNATIONAL SIGNS

Signs can provide information about where you are, where you’re going, how to get there, how far you have to go, what services and sites are available to help make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.

What Are the Functions of Guide Signs?
These signs give information about roadways and routes; the mileage to certain destinations; and roadside services. Routes are the numbered roadways that crisscross the continent.

Destination and mileage signs tell you where you are, which lane to take to get to your destination, what exits are coming up, and how far away the exits are. Destination and mileage signs are either white or green.
Roadside services tell you where to stop for gas and food, look for the white lettering.

Recreational areas are some informational signs which are brown with white lettering. These signs guide you to state and national parks, historic sites, and other places of interest.

International Signs Are Used in the United States?
International signs are those that you can understand without knowing another language. The meaning is conveyed by their color, shape, symbols, and numbers.
