1.3: UNDERSTANDING AND USING THE SMITH SYSTEM

What is the Smith System?
The Smith System consists of five driving guidelines.

Aim High and Look Ahead Not Down
Try to look 20 to 30 seconds ahead as you drive down the road never look directly in front of you which means you are looking 1½ to 2 city blocks ahead going 25 mph in the city and about a ½ mile at 65 mph on the highway.

Keep Your Eyes Moving
Search the roadway constantly for any changes on the roadway that might require you to adjust the speed or position of your car.

Get the Big Picture
Search the whole scene, not just a part of it. As you approach an intersection search for vehicles and pedestrians moving in all directions and for traffic control devices.

Make Sure Others See You
Always communicate with drivers and pedestrians, drive where others can see you, signal your intention well in advance, and tap the brake pedal to warn drivers of your intentions.

Leave Yourself a Way Out or a Margin of Safety
Always leave yourself a way out to avoid a collision. Never drive in a pack. Always keep a margin of space around your car.
